June 15, 2017, ISA InternationalSchool of Guangzhou was authorized to be an IB PYP (Primary Year Program) school. ISA stands proudly within a family of 4800 IB schools around theschool. The investigation process (which began in 2015) usually takes 3-5years. ISA International School of Guangzhou received its official IB authorization faster than any other school in South China.

The International Baccalaureate,commonly known as the IB is a curriculum framework available around the world for students from 3-19 years of age. It is taught in state and private, national and international schools spanning 147 countries around the world. IB program encourages students to be independent thinkers and creativity is fostered in all areas of the curriculum, including academic, sporting or artistic.

ISA International School Science City Campus

ISA International School of Guangzhou has successfully competed for the KXCN-Z-1 plot of development landin Science City (Guangzhou Development Zone). The plot has an area of 37 320 square meters, and is near the Guangdong Olympic Stadium. It takes approximately 20mins to drive to the site from Zhujiang New Town. The plot will be used to build our new K-12 “ISA International School Science City Campus”.We will enroll more than 1800 students here and create a school with a genuine multicultural, international and futures-oriented curriculum. It is scheduled to be operational in August 2020.

In order to develop Science CityCampus into a leading international school in China, ISA is engaged in global design bidding and hired the world's top design team for campus design. Themaster designer holds a PhD in architecture from Harvard University and hisdesigns have won numerous awards worldwide. The planning and design of ISA International School Science City campus will focus on an "all around the learners" planning concept to maximise the preservation of the original mountain and the natural environment.  A ‘patchwork’ layout of the varioustypes of space and function will ensure a forward-looking, modern,well-equipped futuristic school.

The Science City Campus will be built against a small mountain. An international standardised 400-meterathletics track, sports field, and stadium forms the center of the campus, withthe Kindergarten, administrative building, primary school, library, middleschool, high school and student dormitory forming a semi-circular periphery. Above-ground, covered walkways will be set across all the K-12 buildings andthe library for ease of movement across the campus. Designers are committed tobuilding the entire school with an international, modern, garden style,emphasizing open but distinctive space.  It will be a blend of international and Chinese design elements and feature strongly in theeducational landscape.

At the same time, we will investin and construct international facilities such as a competition-standardfootball field, indoor heated swimming pool, track and field facilities, indoor sports courts, facilities for music, art and dance, and a multi-purpose lecture and performance hall accommodating 800 people.

Curriculum 

Starting from the 2017-2018 school year, ISA International School of Guangzhou blends the UK curriculum with the PYP Framework, enabling students to learn and develop their knowledge, concepts, skills, attitudes and actions, and improving students’academic outcomes. We use UK curriculum standards, content, skill andassessment during daily study. IB Framework acts as a guide in inquiry-approach to learning and developing independence. We also focus on developing students’general capabilities, which consist of Literacy, Numeracy, ICT, Social-Intercultural-Ethical Competence and Critical & Creative Thinking.

Language is the basis and meansof all knowledge learning. It plays a crucial role when students learn aboutand explore the world. At ISA, we provide a strong Language Program, including English, Chinese and Mother Tongue to help students achieve a higher quality education.

English is the main teachinglanguage at ISA. The UK Curriculum standards and IB approaches to literacy learning help students achieve very high levels of English communication andacademic English, equivalent to native English speakers of the same year levels in other countries.

ISA also focuses on Chinese and Mother Tongue language learning. Except for 3-4 hours of Chinese lessons forall the students per week, students with a different “Mother Tongue” also have hours of language tuition. Mother Tongue languages offered include Arabic, French, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean and Spanish.

Our strong Language Program supports and deepens student understanding and expands language skills.

Cocurriculum 

We believe that the hallmark of ahigh-quality school is a high quality cocurricular program. Its wide spectrumof activities works in tandem with the academic curriculum to enhance school life. ISA provides rich cocurriculum courses to students from Primary Year to Middle Year.

2017-2018 School Year Block 3 Activities held from 14:00pm to 16:00pm,Thursday afternoon include: Sports (Golf; Karate; Tennis; Fencing; Football;Hockey); Arts (Jr. Drawing; Choir; Piano Music; TNSDrama; Musical; Digital Photography; Animation); Crafts/Hobbies (CreativeCooking; Chinese Culture; Newspaper); Specialist Activities (Coding; Makerspace Lego). All students will be given opportunities to develop leadership skills whenever possible as part of their selected activity. However, activities held on Thursday afternoon will be structured with three formal leadership roles inmind: Captain, Vice-Captain and Secretary. 

On weekends, ISA is transformed into a cocurricular hub with community experts leading groups of students in arange of activities, which include ballet, football, drama, fencing and karate. 

Instrumental music is also animportant part of our cocurricular program. As with all IB world schools, musicis an essential subject within the arts curriculum and one that is taught by highly qualified music specialists at ISA. The new initiative, however sees a collaboration between ISA and a famous instrumental tuition company, “Music Excellence Centre”, who provide experienced professional musicians with a background in musical performance and tuition.

School Life

Longer Day 

ISA’s school year is divided intotwo semesters. The school day begins at 8:30am and it end at 17:00pm from Monday to Thursday, and 8:30am to 16:00pm on Fridays. (One hour earlier on Fridays to compensate for any traffic problems.) The long school hours providea wide variety of regular classes and cocurriculum activities for students.

Communication Channels 

Parents can add classroomteacher’s Wechat as friend and parents are informed of the students’ daily life at school and other school information. Parents and teachers may thereby communicate with each other. At times teachers may be unable to promptly replyto parent due to their busy teaching schedule. We also set up class email for sending some official notice to parents. We encourage parents to contact the homeroom teacher directly if they have any questions.

In addition, each student has ahomework diary (communication book), which acts as a bridge for parents andteachers to record important messages. The communication books are designed toprovide teachers the opportunity to comment upon the students’ performance andbehaviour. Parents can use the communication book to ask questions, and sharetheir suggestions with their children’s teacher. Teachers will aim to respondin a timely manner.

Parents could also make anappointment to meet teacher to learn more about their children.

Besides email, homework diary and face-to-face communication channel mentioned above, we are building and testing ENGAGE Learning Management System as well as ENGAGE Parent Portal. We will usethe system instead of private Wechat as our main communication channel when wecomplete the testing process.

Parents can not only communicate with the classroom teachers using thecommunication tools mentioned, any questions and suggestions concerning theschool, and teaching methods used may be made to the “Parent Service Center”.The Parent Service Center will convey parent’s suggestions and problems to the related department, and school leaders for any related follow up and feedback.

School official notice will be sent by email or “Parent Service Center” WeChat Account. Parents should check their email and WeChat timely in case misunderstanding resulting from missing important messages from the School Leadership Team.

Uniform 

ISA students are required to wear school uniforms on school day and wear sport uniform on PE class. Wearinguniforms helps to develop a team spirit and a collective sense of honour and also helps to enhance the image of the school.

Excellent Canteen 

The canteen in ISA campus provides free snacks which include: fruit, bread, cookies, yogurt and juice for students in the morning and the afternoon. Nutritious lunch which take into consideration Chinese and Western preferences are also available. ISA provides buffet which includes: meat, vegetables, cold dishes, rice, pasta, salad, fruitand soup. All the ingredients are supplied by Metro AG and other respectable suppliers, and are healthy and of a high quality. Our chef (who used to workfor an airline) provides dishes that meet Chinese as well as Western preferences.

School Bus 

ISA provides 11 school bus lineswith bus supervisors: Zhujiang New Town Line A&B&C, Haizhu Line A&B, Taojin Line, Baiyun Line, Favorview Line, Panyu Line，Tianhe North Line and Dongshan Line. There are many stops available on each line.Parents are required to pick up their child/children using a pick-up card at the scheduled time and station. We will choose the school bus stop byconsidering student’s safety and house location. Middle school students canreturn home by themselves if they can ensure their safety; early years and primary students should be picked up by parents or other family members.Parents need to sign a “Statement on Parent Duties of School Bus Safety” to help ensure student’s safety.

Afternoon Nap 

ISA provides a comfortable environment for the students in Early Year to have afternoon nap. Calming musicis played when students are taking a nap. It helps students fall asleep.Primary students and middle school students may choose reading in library, practice instrument in music room, have fun on playground or have a rest intheir classrooms after lunch.

School Nurse 

ISA International School of Guangzhou is equipped with a professional nurse. The nurse establishes good relationships with parents and teachers to ensure all the students informations updated and those who need special medical treatment is being applied. Shealso communicates all clinical information to parents in a sensitive,confidential and helpful manner. When emergency situation arises, the nursewill deal with the student in the first instance. Parents and the Head ofSchool will be informed immediately. A vehicle will also be ready to send the student to the hospital if necessary, and a member of school staff will accompany the child. If a student has any particular medication needs, parents need to provide our nurse with clinical information.

Security Guard 

ISA International School ofGuangzhou has equipped with professional and well-trained security guards toensure the safety of our students. Security guards are responsible for controlling students getting in and out of the school safely every school day. Students are not allowed to leave the school unless the identity of the adults who pick them up have been checked (normally the adult need to provide a pick-up card) by our security guards. The security guard also help students get on and off school bus; direct traffic around the campus, which make it a school day smoother for both our parents and students.

The ISA Charity Fund 

The ISA Charity Fund, sponsoredby ISA International School, relies heavily on the Guangzhou Charity Foundation. The donations are mainly used for educational assistance, children's protection and relief.

Since the school was established in 2015, ISA has been actively involved in charitable activities fulfilling itssocial responsibilities to guide students to learn more about social harmony and strive to build a better community. The ISA Charity Fund will create a standardised and diversified way for the ISA school community to support and promote public welfare.
